A letter to Thomas

Thomas turned eight on Friday. We had friends over to celebrate his birthday today.

Here is Thomas blowing out his birthday candles. For the first time he stopped to make a wish before blowing out the candles. It kind of melt my heart.

He won't tell us what he wished for. But I had to smile because this birthday showed me how different he is just from last year.

Thomas,
You love to lead. You are a great leader.
You are smart. You think for yourself and like a good challenge.
You are impulsive and like to have fun in the moment. But you are getting better about knowing when to stop and think before you do something.
You make friends easily because you love to laugh. You do silly things and it makes everyone smile.
You have a strong sense of morals. You want things to be fair.
You are a big help around the house. You always help your sister and you even help your brother too. Even when you don't want to.
You make mistakes, but you always are willing to try again. You are persistent.
You like to win. You are ambitious and I know you will do big things.
You are observant. I see you. I see you watching your dad and I.
You are starting to ask good questions about life. I love seeing you think out problems and wonder about God.

Eight I think will be fun. I know we will have our share of challenges ahead of us. But I know that means there will be even more opportunities for you to grow. I love seeing you grow up. I love our "date" nights. Our birthday breakfast was my favorite. Your dad and I are proud. We love you.

FIVE

There is something about this month that just pushes my buttons and challenges me. It is not just the holidays. My middle child Oliver celebrates his birthday every December. Between that and all of the mushy gushy Hallmark, Cheerio and Coca Cola commercials my emotions are running wild. There is just not enough tissues to go around folks.

This year Oliver turned five. For some reason five is just hard. It pops up and feels like a big surprise.

Let me tell you about why 5 is wonderful. Five is:

  • Painting
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Legos Legos Legos
  • Snuggling in PJs
  • Reading Dr. Seuss and Curious George
  • Learning your alphabet
  • Writing your name
  • Building forts
  • Being fascinated by bubbles and fireworks
  • Singing songs
  • Love of animals and nature
  • Cheesy knock knock jokes
  • Laughter over silly things

Five isn't easy either. Five is also:

  • Not sharing with your sister
  • Or your brother
  • Wardrobe battles
  • Stubbornness
  • Temper tantrums over the.smallest.thing.ever
  • Not uh. Uh huh. Not uh. Uh huh...
  • Insisting on using the ninja turtles plate
  • One more drink of water
  • I don't want to

Five is being newly independent and wanting to do it all.
However, they still sometimes hold your hand. Sometimes they even admit they want your help. Best of all, they still think you are the cooler than any superhero and better than any toy all the money in the world can buy. Most of the time.

When they turn five they are almost ready for kindergarten and suddenly it feels like they will be off to their first prom. Then you blink and they are off to college or to their first job. Sounds dramatic but that is how five feels. Nothing slows them down. All you want is for time to stand still.

We celebrated Oliver's birthday early this year. We had a little sledding party with a lot of fun.

We had little mugs of hot cocoa and chocolates and marshmallows and candy canes for goodie bags. All the kids took one home to warm up after our fun in the snow.

I made simple little hot cocoa cupcakes. They turned out great, and of course I dropped a full tray of them on the floor. Twice actually. About two hours before the party. Good thing I made extras. Also, it was good that no one was home when this happened. Mommy was not happy. I *possibly* let out some words that shall not be written in this blog.

We decorated with little paper snowflakes that the kids made earlier in the week. It was our fun craft for the week. Making snowflakes with three kids means not a single one is alike.

The kids decorated cookies and had hot cocoa in-between sledding runs. There were lots of sprinkles on my floor. There probably are some still there actually.

Everyone went home. I caught my breath finally. After all the cake and presents and after all of our fun I realized he was going to be 5.

I just want five to stay. I want it to last a little longer. My kids sometimes frustrate me and leave me exhausted. I love them though no matter what.

If there is anything I want to remember about five it is all simple & fun things we do. Fun is not elaborate. It doesn't cost a bunch of money. It is simple moments where we just spend time together. Usually at home together.

I want more of that for five.

Happy Birthday Thomas!

We had Thomas's birthday party on Sunday. Thomas wanted to have a Star Wars party so we did all things Star Wars. This was the first year that we let him help pick out everything (on a budget of course). These days he loves super heroes, anything related to science, and star wars. He has grown up so fast! I find myself wondering what happened to my little boy. He is so big now!

I made the invitations using an invite we found online. They turned out pretty cute. Thomas loves to play Lego Star Wars on the Wii with dad so it was a perfect find for us. They were cheap to make too because I just printed them from Walgreens for 10 cents each.

We ordered our cake from Ginny's Cakes here in North Liberty. Normally I am not one to do the custom cakes but she also did Oliver's first birthday cake. I was so impressed I wanted her to make a cake again for us! She did such an awesome awesome job! She custom made us an R2D2 cake exactly like I wanted it to be! Thomas's face lit up when he saw the cake. R2D2 was a big hit with everyone else at the party too!

I tried to get a couple of pictures taken for all the out of town people that couldn't make it. We decorated the place black, blue, and green and with little stars everywhere.

Thomas got lots of presents and loves his new toys. We are going to be getting rid of some of his old things he doesn't play with anymore. We will be donating them this weekend with a special post-birthday party trip. We do this every major holiday and birthday to keep it simple around here.

Here is another photo of the main living area. Brent set up some fun music for us to listen to during the party. We played star wars music of course plus a bunch of Thomas's favorite songs and a few party songs.

Here is Thomas with his birthday cake! He was smiling so big!!!

Here Thomas and Austin are posing by the big Darth Vader and Yoda poster we found at a party store. It was a lucky find and you can be sure it will be going up in the basement play room!

These were the "yoda sodas" we made. They were made with lime sherbet, ginger ale, and lemon lime soda. They were extra fizzy and green like yoda! I found them online and couldn't resist, it was too cute of an idea to pass up! We also served "galactic pizza" and "space snacks."

And what is a party without a couple presents? Here Thomas is opening some cool star wars gear. All the kids had a blast testing out the new toys.

Grandma got him a star wars coloring book and pajama set too!

Oliver was so cute at the party. He was calm here but he loved the balloons and the remote controlled R2D2 his brother got.
